Stand Up Pouches: The Complete Guide

You spent 6 months developing an electrolyte water. Your target consumer is health-conscious and aged 25–38 — they buy based on packaging aesthetics on Instagram. Aluminum cans require a 100,000-unit minimum and $5,000+ in tooling. You cannot afford that.

A stand-up pouch with a spout delivers leak resistance, 7-color photographic printing, and a 100-unit minimum — at roughly 70% less cost than aluminum cans at low volume. We built this guide from our production floor data so you can evaluate that option with numbers, not guesses.

Featured Snippet

A stand-up pouch is a flexible packaging format with a bottom gusset that allows it to stand upright on retail shelves. It uses multi-layer barrier films. Custom printed pouches start at 100 units with 10–21 day delivery. Common materials include PET/AL/PE, kraft/PE, and compostable PLA/PBAT blends. They serve food, beverage, pet, and health supplement brands.

What Is a Stand Up Pouch?

A stand-up pouch (SUP) is a flexible bag with a bottom gusset. The gusset expands when the bag is filled. This lets the pouch stand upright on retail shelves without external support.

The global pet food market alone will reach $150 billion by 2026. Soft packaging within that segment grows at 9.3% CAGR. Stand-up pouches drive most of that growth because they cut shipping weight and occupy less shelf space.

Core Structure

Most SUPs use 3 functional layers. The outer layer provides printability. The middle layer acts as the barrier. The inner layer enables heat sealing and food contact.

A typical PET/AL/PE structure works like this:

LayerMaterialThicknessFunction
OuterPET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)12 micronPrint surface, puncture resistance
MiddleAluminum Foil7–9 micronOxygen and moisture barrier
InnerPE (Polyethylene)50–80 micronHeat seal, food-contact layer

The aluminum foil layer blocks oxygen at rates below 0.1 cc/m²/day. This matters for products like coffee, nuts, and pet food. Without aluminum, shelf life drops from 12 months to 3 months or less.

Our standard pouch thickness ranges from 100 to 150 microns. Heavier products (over 2 lbs) use the 150-micron specification. This meets ASTM D882 tensile strength requirements of 20+ MPa.

Common Applications

We manufacture SUPs for 15 different industries. The top 5 applications are:

  1. Coffee and tea — one-way degassing valve required, OTR below 1 cc/m²/day
  2. Pet food — heavy-duty film at 150 microns, resealable zipper
  3. Health supplements — moisture barrier with desiccant pocket
  4. Snack foods — clear window option for product visibility
  5. Liquid products — spout and cap, leak-tested at 0.5 psi

Our factory in Guangdong, China produces 50 million units annually. We have served 1,300+ brands across 15 countries since our founding in 2009.

What Materials Are Used in Stand Up Pouch Packaging?

Material selection determines barrier performance, shelf life, and compliance status. Each combination serves a specific product requirement. Choosing wrong can cut shelf life by 75%.

Standard Material Options

Material ComboOTR (cc/m²/day)WVTR (g/m²/day)Best ForRelative Cost

PET/PE50–1001–3Snacks, dry goods$$

PET/AL/PE (heavy)<0.1<0.1Heavy products (>2 lbs)$$$$
PLA/PBAT (compostable)200–4005–10Compostable product lines$$$$

OTR = Oxygen Transmission Rate. WVTR = Water Vapor Transmission Rate. Lower numbers mean better barrier protection.

Choosing by Product Type

Coffee needs OTR below 1 cc/m²/day. We use PET/AL/PE with a one-way degassing valve. The valve vents CO₂ without letting oxygen enter. Valve activation pressure is 0.1–0.3 psi.

Pet food needs puncture resistance and resealability. We recommend 150-micron thickness for bags over 2 lbs. The global pet food market will hit $150 billion by 2026. Soft packaging captures an increasing share because pouches weigh 90% less than cans.

Compostable products use PLA 70% + PBAT 30%. This is the standard BPI-certified formulation. It meets ASTM D6400 requirements for industrial composting. However, OTR is 200–400 cc/m²/day. This limits shelf life to approximately 6 months for oxygen-sensitive products. PLA bags cost 40–60% more than standard PE bags. BPI certification itself costs $1,000–$3,000 in application fees plus annual renewal.

Plant-based milks and beverages need liquid-grade seals. The global plant-based milk market grows at 12.5% CAGR from $45 billion to $80 billion by 2030. Spout pouches capture this demand because they reduce shipping weight by 60% versus glass bottles.

Barrier Testing at Our Factory

Our in-house QC lab runs 3 tests on every production batch:

  1. OTR testing per ASTM D3985 — verifies oxygen barrier performance
  2. WVTR testing per ASTM F1249 — verifies moisture barrier using modulated infrared sensor
  3. Seal integrity per ASTM F2095 — verifies heat seal strength under pressure

We also run tensile strength tests per ASTM D882 and drop testing for heavy pouch configurations. We reject batches that fall outside ±10% of specification. This happens in less than 2% of production runs.
