What Are the Three Main Coffee Bag Materials?
Each coffee bag material has a specific film structure. The structure determines barrier performance, cost, and end-of-life disposal. Here is what each one contains.
Kraft/PE uses unbleached or bleached cellulose fiber on the outside. The inner layer is low-density polyethylene (LDPE). A standard structure is 70 gsm kraft paper laminated to 40 μm PE. The paper provides tensile strength and a matte surface for printing. The PE provides a moisture and grease barrier. Kraft/PE bags weigh 40–60% less than equivalent foil bags.
PET/AL/PE (Foil Laminate) uses three layers. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is the outer print layer at 12 μm. Aluminum foil is the middle barrier layer at 7 μm. PE is the inner sealant layer at 50 μm. Total thickness ranges from 100–150 μm. The aluminum layer blocks oxygen, moisture, and UV light. This structure is the industry standard for specialty coffee worldwide.
PLA/PBAT (Compostable) uses bio-based films. PLA (polylactic acid) comes from corn starch fermentation. PBAT (polybutylene adipate terephthalate) is a flexible, biodegradable polymer. A typical structure uses NatureFlex 25 μm on the outside and PBAT 50 μm as the sealant. Total thickness is 80–120 μm. This structure meets industrial compostability standards but has weaker barrier properties than kraft or foil.

Barrier Properties: OTR and WVTR Compared
Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) measures oxygen passage through a film. The unit is cc/m²/day at 23°C and 50% relative humidity. For roasted coffee, OTR above 1.0 cc/m²/day causes measurable staling within 14 days. This is the single most important metric for coffee packaging.
WVTR (Water Vapor Transmission Rate) measures moisture passage. The unit is g/m²/24h. Roasted coffee absorbs moisture above 5.0 g/m²/24h WVTR. Moisture pickup degrades aroma and accelerates oxidation.

Foil laminate provides 100–200x more oxygen protection than kraft. Kraft provides 10–30x more protection than compostable. These are measured values, not supplier estimates.
One important note on valve compatibility. One-way degassing valves on kraft and foil bags vent CO₂ without letting oxygen in. Degassing valves reduce internal OTR exposure further. On compostable bags, valve adhesion requires a wider seal area. We recommend a 10 mm valve flange on compostable structures versus 8 mm on foil.
If your coffee rotates within 30 days, kraft may be sufficient. If your distribution cycle exceeds 60 days, foil is necessary. Compostable works for subscription models with biweekly delivery.
Cost Breakdown: Every Order Volume Compared
Material cost per unit depends on volume, structure, and print method. We use HP Indigo 20000 digital presses for runs from 100 to 5,000 units. This press prints 7-color process at 40 meters per minute. No plates are required. For runs above 5,000 units, we use W&H Miraflex flexo presses at 150 meters per minute.
